Dr. Danielle Hairston is a double-boarded Psychiatrist and residency program director at the Howard University Hospital. (She was also my resident when I was a medical student at Howard University College of Medicine). In this episode, she shares a glimpse into her practice as a Psychiatrist and how she interacts with her team of residents and medical students.
Dr. Hairston is advocate, effecting change for the state of mental health in the black community. She shares how she was initially discouraged from pursuing a career in Psychiatry, and how she ultimately decided to follow her calling. We discuss her pathway to medicine, which included the ODASIS pipeline program at Rutgers.
Dr. Hairston discusses current events including the pre-hospital use of ketamine (a powerful sedative) to treat “excited delirium”. She also provides her thoughts on residency interviews and the Match process in the setting of COVID19, information that will be very helpful for current medical students.
Are you or someone you know finishing medical school and applying to residency this year? Are you considering pursuing a career in mental health? This episode is for you!
