This week, Psychiatrist Dr. Kevin Simon joins the show to tackle this serious and extremely important topic. During this episode we discuss the history and culture of medicine that is steeped in paternalism. We talk about the progress that has been made on these fronts. Dr. Simon and I share examples that we observed and share advice for where people can go for help, including the significance of Title IX.
We end the episode by discussing the “gray areas” that can certainly present unique challenges. Kevin and I shared some ground rules that we both live by:
- Keep your hands to yourself
- Don’t use off-color humor or double entendres
- Don’t engage in physical acts at your place of employment
- Be careful about hierarchy in hospital relationships
These concepts may seem a bit draconian, however maintaining strict boundaries helps keep us out of the gray areas and questionable behavior. What are your thoughts? Are we too strict? How do you choose interact with your co-workers? What do you think about relationships at work? We would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
