This week’s episode features equestrian and surgeon, Dr. Auriel August. She is a viable competitor for the most interesting woman in the world. As a surgery resident completing her research years, she manages to maintain her lifelong passion, equestrian arts. We talk about this and how she leases her mare Roux to practice and compete in her free time.
Dr. August shares her incredible story in this episode. As a child, she was always “different”. She didn’t usually fit in with her classmates. As an engineering major at Duke, she was a triple-minority, a Gay, Black Woman. She talks about how she learned to embrace these labels and be her own, independent self. Despite a strong academic pedigree, she faced challenges when applying to medical school. She has overcome those challenges and now thrives in her chosen field of general surgery. Moving to California for residency provided opportunities to become involved in healthcare innovation. I really enjoyed talking with Dr. August. I found her story incredibly inspiring and I know you will as well.

Do you know anyone struggling to “fit in”? It turns out, they don’t have to fit in to be successful. This is the perfect episode to share.
