-An inside scoop on finding your first attending job

In this episode, Dr. Steven Bradley our host sits down with Michael Johnson a lawyer specialized in physician contracts. You may remember him from a previous episode in season 6. Click here!! One of our most popular episodes, it is crammed full of advice for navigating the job hunt as a physician. Listen to the good, the bad and the ugly of Steven’s job hunt.

Advice for finding your first attending job:

  1. Networking and Preparation: Networking is crucial in finding a job as a resident physician. Attend conferences and events in your field, reach out to mentors, and connect with other healthcare professionals. Also, be prepared to discuss your skills, experiences, and goals in a professional manner. It’s important to research the organization you’re applying to and to be knowledgeable about their mission, values, and services.
  2. Focus on fit: Look for a workplace culture that aligns with your values and goals. Research the organization’s history and reputation, and read reviews from current and former employees. This can give you a better idea of the work environment and whether it would be a good fit for you. Additionally, consider geographic location, cost of living, and other lifestyle factors that could impact your job satisfaction.
  3. Negotiating your Offer: Once you have received a job offer, take time to carefully review the terms and conditions. Consider negotiating for a better salary, benefits, or work schedule. It’s important to be professional and respectful when negotiating, and to have a clear understanding of your priorities and what you are willing to accept. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to seek advice from mentors and other healthcare professionals. Ultimately, finding the right job as a resident physician requires patience, persistence, and preparation.
