25: Professionalism, Respectability Politics and the Match

Professionalism, Respectability Politics and the Match

This week, our host Dr. Steven Bradley is joined by co-host Dr. Nate Jones and they discuss several hot-button, current events issues affecting the medical community and Black culture.

We continue last week’s conversation by discussion professionalism, respectability politics and the match. We share our experiences with professionalism and how it can be weaponized. We also chat about respectability politics and how we must recognize the “priviledge” they provide so we can continue to advocate for our patients to as best we can. We tie everything together by discussing how these concepts can affect people at various stages of their medical careers, especially those applying to residency.

  • How can professionalism be weaponized?
  • How do you recognize and avoid respectability politics?
  • What can those involved in medical education do to create a welcoming environment for underrepresented students?
