Minority Report: Experiences of a Black Man in Medicine

In this episode, Dr. Steven Bradley, our host, shares his experiences as a Black man in the medical field. Despite making up a small percentage of the medical community, Black physicians face unique challenges and obstacles in their careers. Some of the key points discussed in this episode include:

  • Facing discrimination and bias from colleagues and patients. This can make it difficult to advance in their careers and can also have a negative impact on their mental and emotional well-being.
  • Lack of representation: Black males are underrepresented in the medical field, making it harder for them to find mentors and role models who look like them. This can also lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of belonging.
  • Challenges in medical education: Black males may face additional challenges in medical school and residency, such as a lack of diversity in the curriculum and a lack of support from faculty and staff. This can make it harder for them to succeed academically and to feel prepared for their careers in medicine.

#PASS THE MIC and share your experiences

Despite these challenges, many black males in medicine are committed to breaking down barriers and making the field more inclusive for future generations. In this episode, we hear from several black male physicians about their experiences and what they believe needs to change in order to create a more equitable and just medical community for everyone.
